Locations we visit
1. Nonnberg Abbey
Nonnberg Abbey is where the real Maria was a novice, and it also appears in the film. The nuns at the abbey were reportedly delighted to have the film crew there and often helped during the filming.
2. St. Peter’s Cemetery
This cemetery inspired the scene where the Von Trapp family hides from the Nazis. The real Von Trapp family did not actually hide here, but the cemetery’s unique beauty inspired the filmmakers.
3. Residenzplatz
This historic square was featured in the scene where Maria splashes in the Residenz Fountain while singing ’I Have Confidence.’ Julie Andrews nearly slipped on the wet cobblestones while filming this scene.
4. Mozart Bridge
This charming bridge appears in the scene where Maria and the children cross it while singing “Do-Re-Mi.” The cast and crew had to film this scene multiple times because passersby kept stopping to watch.
5. Mirabell Gardens
This is where Maria and the children sang ’Do-Re-Mi.’ The children became quite attached to Julie Andrews, who often played games with them between takes.
6. Felsenreitschule (Rock Riding School)
This impressive venue was the site of the dramatic final concert scene. The audience in the concert scene included many locals who were thrilled to be part of the movie.
7. Schloss Leopoldskron
This palace was used for the exterior shots of the Von Trapp family home. The boating scene where the children fall into the lake was particularly challenging to film, with multiple takes required.
